Honoring our Special Volunteers!
Vanessa Bui, one of our much appreciated New To You Thrift Store volunteers shares the dramatic and uplifting story of her past:
In 1975 Vanessa lost her job with the Vietnamese Army when the North Vietnamese communists invaded South Vietnam. Her brother lost his job as a policeman, and her uncle lost his job as Chief of Police. Because of their governmental ties to South Vietnam, Vanessa and her family were discriminated against and treated badly by the
North Vietnamese. Vanessa was jailed for nine months while she was pregnant; she was treated poorly, not given enough food to eat and only allowed to shower once a month. Her husband, a helicopter pilot was sentenced to six years in prison. Vanessa lost three siblings including one sister who was allowed to die without treatment in a hospital.
Eventually Vanessa and her family made their way to the United States, where they have lived for 24 years. Vanessa says that her life has dramatically changed for the better. The U.S. has given her family freedom, education and the peaceful lifestyle they deserve.
