Rape Myths and Facts
THE MORE WE LEARN about rape, the more we realize how many of our attitudes about rape are based on myths rather than facts. Myths about rape are widespread and believed by men and women from all segments of society. How these myths originated and why they persist is connected to the history of patriarchy and sexism.
Facts:
1. Men DO NOT rape women because that is men’s nature and biological role.
2. ANY woman can be raped
3.Men rape women to exert CONTROL and confirm their POWER.
4. Women are raped most commonly in their own homes - by someone they know.
5. Men who rape come from all races, all ethnicities, and all social classes.
6. Men who rape are mostly ordinary, everyday guys - not psychos.
7. Acquaintance rape is as serious as rape by a stranger.
8. Women never desire rape, and they do not provoke rape by the way they dress or the way they flirt.
9. Women do not lie about being raped. Rape is the most underreported crime of all.

Testimonials:
“Very impressive, exceeded my expectations.”
“Very intense and a huge amount of information is crammed into a short period of time. Speakers were great and resources and referral sources were very valuable. Somewhat overwhelming. Excellent materials.”
“Informative. Just Great! Even though I was overwhelmed, I am really grateful for all the info I gathered. I would recommend others to attend any related program at YWCA. It’s not just a place to work, but also to learn.”
“Comprehensive & Thorough in topics, contents & presenters. Lots of written materials for me to refer to in the future as I work with this special population that requires intensive guidance.”
“Very well done. Content was more than expected (which was wonderful)."
"I have found each presenter to be well-informed and presented their agency well. I see and hear their passion about what they are doing to help victims of DV and to prevent DV. It has been very helpful and beneficial to me."
"I appreciate the attentiveness of the coordinators to our physical needs – e.g. the temperature in the room, providing food, etc.”
