YWCA of Glendale Chronology

  • 1926 15 prominent Glendale women formed the YWCA and rented several locations, establishing employment services for mostly domestic work. Business girls’ club was started. A tea and luncheon room and a miniature golf course was also operated. 
  • 1930 In the early thirties, free meals and emergency relief offered in another rental house. Later a dormitory for transient women and a summer camp program on Catalina Island were added.  
  • 1934 Building at Wilson and Orange Street. The Girl Reserves were started. 
  • 1936 YWCA was incorporated and property was bought at 202 West Doran.  
  • 1939 Purchased 735 East Lexington for $5,246, of which $3,000 in equity was donated by the owners, Dr. and Mrs. Norman Paine. 
  • 1941 Virginia Sharon hired as General Secretary (later Executive Director) serving the YWCA for 37 years. Ruth Priest became Young Adult Director and Girl Reserve Director.
  • 1948 Dr. Paine chaired a committee to raise $100,000. Kitchen was doubled in size and recreation building built (the gym). 
  • 1951 By the time Ruth Priest left this year, she had established over 30 Y-Teen Clubs for junior and senior high students, plus a college group at Glendale College.  There were well over 1000 teens involved, plus a large summer camp program. 
  • 1952 Gifts from Assistance League and Oakmont League kick off campaign to build pool. 
  • 1953 Las Amigas-organized by Doris Sisley. They were the “young matrons” of the YWCA and a support group. 
  • 1954 Merit award received from US Air Force for participation in Civil Defense activities.
  •  1955 15,000 individual girls participated in Y-dances, camping, rummage sales, and carnival. 
  • 1956 Pool dedicated, completing the block-long YWCA structure.
  •  1962 Las Amigas gift shop established to meet the demand for handicraft projects created by members. 
  • 1968 Sesame Street program for preschool children opened at Wesley Methodist Church. 
  • 1969 Residence closed. Dormitory rooms converted to office space for staff. 
  • 1970 Las Amigas sent boxes of toys and clothing to Vietnamese orphanages. 
  • 1973 Laubach Tutor Workshop started with 11 volunteers headed by Nena Kelty and Eleanor Nickel.
  •  1975 Women's Resource Center started. Counseling and information for women seeking new careers was provided. 
  • 1977 After many years of successful rummage sales, the Thrift Shop ("Y's Buys") was started with Jane Tidmarsh as Manager. Martha Williams was YWCA President. Childcare offered on-site at the YWCA. 
  • 1978 Child Care expanded. Griffith Manor opens to provide child care for children of 'low-income families. 
  • 1979 YWCA Phoenix House established for battered women and children. A fire damages leased facilities. 
  • 1980 YWCA Phoenix House established for battered women and children. A fire damages leased facilities. 
  • 1982 YWCA is remodeled to expand childcare, and new center is dedicated. 
  • 1984 Permanent house for the Phoenix House (now the Sunrise Shelter) is acquired through a grant from the City of Glendale. 
  • 1985 Donation of property from Helen and Rod Nern to the YWCA. The childcare center at 411 E. Colorado opened. Men's locker facilities renovated. Pool remodeled.  New roof and stained-glass were installed thanks to Chuck Munn. 
  • 1990 glass windows put into the Regency Hall in memory of Virginia Sharon. 
  • 1994 ENCORE Program launched. 
  • 1995 Snack shop opened 
  • 1996 Our ENCORE Plus Program was proclaimed the most successful of all YWCA's in the nation. "Hamilton Court", a facility for transitional housing for battered women and their children was acquired by Hamilton Court Housing Corporation, and the YWCA ran the program there. We start our Legacy Luncheon event and celebrate our 70th Birthday. 
  • 1997 Hamilton Court acquired a new facility for the YWCA to run a transitional domestic
    violence program for single women called Step Ahead.  
  • 2006 Celebrated our 80th Birthday.  
  • 2008 Hamilton Court transitional domestic violence program transferred to New Hope. On termination of the YMCA's lease, took possession of our pool and gym facilities once more. Started interior renovations and a new swim program.
