2019 training dates to be announced
YWCA Glendale offers two 40-hour Domestic Violence Counselor Trainings per year for staff, volunteers and community members who are looking to offer direct support to survivors of domestic violence or to better understand domestic violence.
Completion of this training meets the requirements set by California Evidence Code 1037.1 for designation as a Domestic Violence Counselor. After completing 40 hours of training, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion that allows them to pursue volunteer and employment opportunities working directly with survivors of domestic violence in California.
All sessions of the training are mandatory and must be completed before you can work directly with domestic violence survivors.
The goal of the 40-Hour Domestic Violence Counselor Training is to provide participants with in-depth knowledge of the dynamics of domestic violence to better their skills in supporting people who have experienced domestic violence.
- Dynamics of domestic violence
- What it means to experience domestic violence
- Working with survivors from different cultures and backgrounds
- Peer counseling and active listening skills
- YWCA Glendale’s services and programs
- Legal options for survivors
- Practicing self-care as advocates
These topics are facilitated by experienced staff and community speakers through presentations, multimedia (including videos), group discussions and activities, and questions and answers.
Everyone can benefit from becoming more aware of domestic violence. We encourage community members, educational professionals, health professionals, members of faith communities, law enforcement, legal professionals, social workers and anyone interested in supporting survivors of domestic violence to apply today.
Please note, after completion of this training course, you will only be considered a “domestic violence counselor” if you are employed by a domestic violence victim service organization, whether financially compensated or not, for the purpose of rendering advice or assistance to victims of domestic violence, according to California Evidence Code Section §1037.1(a)(1).
YWCA Glendale offers very limited volunteer positions at this time. Completion of the 40-Hour Domestic Violence Counselor Training does not guarantee a position in our program. However, once you have completed the training and are interested in volunteering with us, please contact YWCA Glendale’s Volunteer and Community Engagement Coordinator, to inquire about opportunities at firstname.lastname@example.org
