Last week we participated in @ca_partnership's annual #PolicyAdvocacyDay. Our advocates (👋 Hasmik!) spoke to elected officials about our top policy priorities for serving domestic violence victims and survivors. These priorities include stable funding for DV prevention work and advocating for SB 914, which addresses homelessness in domestic violence survivors by requiring cities and counties develop specific responses and counter economic abuse by giving survivors a way to prove their debts were coerced, thus stopping collection against the survivor. ⁠

Recently our Art Therapy Group was asked to create a project based on positive affirmations, what they've learned, statements of hope, and words of encouragement. Some of our participants consented to show their work and so their pieces are currently on display at our Glendale location (and of course, for you here! ⬆️🎨).⁠

Studies have shown that Art Therapy benefits people both young and old; it can improve communication skills, help with anxiety, depression, and it can even help reduce feelings of isolation. 🧡⁠

Today is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls. Current #FVPSA funding leaves many Tribes without the means to provide culturally-based advocacy and support for Native women, yet they face some of the highest rates of domestic violence. ⁠

We are so ready for our Girls’ Empowerment Performing Arts Program to start next week! We are once again partnering with @antaeustheatre to teach girls the art of storytelling, writing, and performing through their professional actors and playwrights, including Ann Noble. Noble, a 25-year professional theatre veteran, was recently highlighted for her incredible work in and for our community, including her work with YWCA Glendale and Pasadena. This past winter, our Girls’ Empowerment Program Manager, Jomie Liu, sat in @caltechy's Community Service and Advocacy Fair to recruit mentors and volunteers and there she met Annice Jackson, @sgvncnw’s Youth Director. @sgvncnw is a volunteer organization that aims to educate, empower, and advocate for African American women and their families in our community. ⁠
